Set & Setting ✨

In somatic and therapeutic work, we often speak about the relationship between our internal experience and the environments that surround us.

Set refers to the mindset we bring into an experience. Our intentions, openness, and willingness to engage with what emerges.

Setting refers to the environment that holds us. The physical space, sensory experience, atmosphere, and relational field that shape how supported and safe we feel.

Neither exists independently of the other.

The nervous system is continuously responding to cues from within and around us.

It is influenced by what it perceives, what it remembers, and what it experiences in the present moment.

This is why the conditions that surround healing matter.

The quality of light. The feeling of a room. The pace of an experience.

The textures, sounds, and sensory cues that communicate safety and support to the nervous system.

And setting is not only physical.

The people holding the space are part of the experience as well.

Their presence, attunement, and ability to remain grounded contribute to the relational environment in which healing unfolds.

At Senses, thoughtful attention is given to both set and setting.

Drawing from ISITTA methodology, Hakomi principles, and polyvagal theory, we work soma-up — beginning with the body’s own experience rather than the mind’s interpretation of it.

Dr. Jesse holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, with specializations in somatic psychology and neuropsychology.

Over 25 years, his work has shaped some of the most recognized names in integrative mental health and wellness — among them, co-founding MentalHealth.com, where he serves as Clinical Director, and 10 years of service at both Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura.

His clinical expertise has also reached millions through four seasons of A&E’s TV show “Intervention”, bringing trauma-informed care and the possibility of healing into public consciousness.

Throughout his career, Dr. Jesse has bridged modern neuroscience, trauma-informed expertise, and ancient wisdom traditions — bringing depth, integrity, and rare breadth of experience to the field of embodied healing.

The body doesn’t process experience through words alone.

It processes through sensation, rhythm and movement.

When expression is interrupted - through stress, conditioning or trauma - the body adapts by holding.

Over time this can show up as tension, numbness or disconnection.

Set & Setting ✨

In somatic and therapeutic work, we often speak about the relationship between our internal experience and the environments that surround us.

Set refers to the mindset we bring into an experience. Our intentions, openness, and willingness to engage with what emerges.

Setting refers to the environment that holds us. The physical space, sensory experience, atmosphere, and relational field that shape how supported and safe we feel.

Neither exists independently of the other.

The nervous system is continuously responding to cues from within and around us.

It is influenced by what it perceives, what it remembers, and what it experiences in the present moment.

This is why the conditions that surround healing matter.

Trauma isn’t only remembered cognitively. It is held in physiology - in tension, shutdown, hyper vigilance, and relational patterns that once protected you.

In our sessions, we gently track these responses, build regulation, and expand your capacity to feel without overwhelm.
